Baby Safe Sleep guidelines

February 22, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Vlada Yushchenko, a 19-year-old Ukrainian refugee, holds her son Daniel, during an interview with The Associated Press in Brasov, Romania, Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023. Yushchenko was still in her teens and nearly three months pregnant when she hugged her husband at the border, turned away and walked into Moldova. Now she’s in Romania, one of the millions of Ukrainians forced to flee Russia’s invasion of their country. Her baby, Daniel, was born there eight months ago and still hasn’t met his father Yaroslav, who is 21 and, like most men of fighting age, prohibited from leaving Ukraine. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)

New guidelines about safe sleep were released by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Some of the most important messages are that a baby should sleep alone, on his/her back, on a firm mattress with no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or fluffy bumpers in the area.

We know that a baby’s death is difficult to think about and no parent imagines it will happen to them. Families need to see that this can happen to anybody but, by adopting safe sleep habits, we can dramatically reduce the number of deaths.
