Nothing More is one of the best live bands you’ll ever see.
Let me say that again, but more to the point… you need to see a Nothing More concert.

Nothing More
Nothing More brought the U.S. leg of their Carnal Nature World Tour to the Riverside Municipal Auditorium last Wednesday, along with Catch Your Breath, Archers, and Doobie, and it’s a show I will remember for a long time. From the moment vocalist Jonny Hawkins walks on the stage, barefoot, with no shirt, and with his chest painted, the energy in the room changes. It’s difficult to explain to people that don’t go to concerts what makes a great front man, but Hawkins may be the perfect example.
He instantly grabs the audience’s attention, and then for 90 minutes, he doesn’t let it go. He takes each and every person in the room with him on a ride of emotions, and through a fantastic catalog of songs. This was only my second time seeing Nothing More, and now I can’t wait to catch them again. While we were waiting for the band to take the stage another photographer told me that Jonny had suffered a bad case of food poisoning the night before (Thanks Matt!), and I am so glad he was feeling better, or at least enough to take the stage. Again, this guy is absolutely born to do this.

Along with Jonny in the front line we’ve got guitarist Mark Vollelunga, and like Jonny he’s everywhere, including on the barricade playing for the fans. He even took the time to give a pick to a young fan. It’s part of why I love this band live so much, the interaction they have with, and the respect they seem to have for their fans. Also up front is bassist Daniel Oliver, and please let me photograph him every day. It’s just amazing to watch them play and perform. There is something special about this front line that’s hard to describe, but I keep coming back to this being one of the best bands touring today.

On drums is Ben Anderson, and he is a huge reason Nothing More sounds as tight as they do. Nothing More was a support act for Disturbed’s 25th Anniversary tour, but trust me when I say they could compete on stage with any main tour headliner out there. Every member of this band is a rock star on stage, it’s something you just have to see for yourself..

Finishing off the night, Jonny, Vallelunga, and Oliver went back to the barricade, putting some drums in the fans hands and playing up close. This band is what music is all about. Be sure to check out the Carnal Nature World Tour when it comes to a venue near you.

Catch Your Breath

I had not seen Catch Your Breath before, but had heard great things, so I was excited for their set. They didn’t disappoint. This is a relatively new band, founded in 2017 in Austin, TX, and Vocalist Josh Mowery sounded fantastic, He works the entire stage and by the time they were done the audience wanted more. It’s gotta be hard to play right before Nothing More, and Catch Your Breath was perfect in that #2 spot, in large part because of Mowery’s vocals.

Guitarist Teddy Herrera led the energy stage right, and handled backing vocals. At times he looked at the crowd with a huge smile, and it was so obvious how much these guys love what they do. Bassist Cianan Madigan was the surprise to me. Man, he can play, and what an amazing stage presence. Him playing like that, with that much energy and movement, is amazing to see.

Holding the beat with Cianan is drummer Onell Hernandez, and watching him play is like watching a clinic at NAMM. So good. Their set covered the songs their fans would want, including “Deadly”, “Savages”, “Ghost Inside the Shell”, and the finale of “Shame On Me”. Don’t do what I did, and wait too long to see Catch Your Breath. Catch this tour.

Archers

This is a band that I had been told I needed to see, but I had not until Wednesday. Wow. I had no idea what I’d been missing, but I won’t make that mistake again. Vocalist Nathan Pulley has such an amazing voice. Rounding out the rest of band is guitarist Ben Koehler, Bassist Oscar Porter, and drummer Grayson Mesarosh.

Seeing them for my first time, I have to say that “Say This Sober” and “Bitter” were the highlight songs for me. I’ll definitely be checking out their catalog. I do want to add something here I have said many times in the past… I don’t understand people getting tickets to a show and then showing up for just the headliners. Archers is a perfect example why you should also catch the openers. These are bands that are hungry for success, and that put on great performances. Next time you get tickets to a show, any show, get there early, grab a beer, and enjoy the music.

Doobie

Kicking off the night was Doobie, and again, this is an artist I hadn’t seen before. In fact I had not heard of him until Wednesday. On his Instagram it says he’s “somewhere between rap and rock n’ roll”, and definitely intrigued me. The sound definitely delivered on the idea, although vocally it maybe leaned more to rap side, with the band adding the rock side. In particular, guitarist Jon Suhh. He brought the energy, and the classic rock star feel to the stage.

The other guitarist in the band is Tony Earnheart, and the backstage is a DJ and drummer keeping the time. All-in-all, impressed with Doobie. His latest album is “Give ‘Em Hell Until You Get to Heaven”, and is available to stream everywhere.
I know that I have already said this, but if you’re showing up at shows just for the headliners you’re missing out. You can catch the Carnal Nature World Tour through March.
