Concert Review by Mike Z: Slayer at the Forum 11/30/19

By Mike Z on

After 38 years, Slayer killed for the final time on November 30, 2019 at the Forum in Inglewood, California.  After a steady slew of AC/DC tunes, countdown clocks appeared for the final five minutes until show time. The screens flashed pictures of the band throughout the years mixed with the minutes counting down.  Once clock hit zero, the Forum went black and the curtain dropped as the band opened into their classic “South of Heaven.”

The unrelenting 20 song set spanned their entire career, only leaving out tunes from three albums (Divine Intervention, Undisputed Attitude and the Grammy Award winning Christ Illusion). The set list was heavy on songs from “Raining Blood” and “Seasons In The Abyss” with four from each spread throughout the set.  After the first four songs, the band paused and the crowd immediately broke out into “SLAYER” chants. Singer/bassist Tom Araya addressed the crowd for the first time by saying “Thank you for being here, one last time.” They began playing “War Ensemble” with fire pods exploding everywhere and throughout the song.  Five songs later, Tom checked in with the crowd again, “You guys having a good time? This next song is called ‘Payback’.”  Before the final five songs, Tom spoke honestly saying “I usually don’t say much.  I don’t know what to say, we’re from LA for many f*ckin years.  When we started off, it was hard to get support….doesn’t matter anymore.  This next song is about love, a special bond that can’t be broken, like music, can’t be broken” and they played “Dead Skin Mask”.

With the start of the final song, “Angel of Death,” the end was near and the reality began to kick in for the band and audience.  During one of the last guitar solos, guitarist Gary Holt was consumed with emotion and stopped playing. He held his guitar up in front of him and the crowd roared.  At the end of the song, the band hugged one another. They brought out the entire crew, whom they all hugged as well, and took a photo with everyone on stage and the crowd behind them.  Founding members Tom Araya and Kerry King remained on stage for a few extra minutes as everyone else left the stage.  They both took their time to take in the crowd one final time.  After King exited, a choked up Araya addressed the still-at-capacity crowd saying “Thank you.  Thank you very much.  I want to thank you for sharing your time with us.  Time is precious, so I want to thank you for sharing that time with us.  I’m gonna miss you guys.  But the most important thing is I want to thank you for being a part of my life.  Goodnight.  You guys be safe.”

It will be interesting to see if this is just the end of “touring” or really the end of the band performing live.  As Ozzy Osbourne, Kiss, Scorpions and Motley Crue have taught us, no one is really ever done.
