The Smashing Pumpkins hit FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine last Thursday, with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and AFI opening the show. Calling The Smashing Pumpkins “legends” is an understatement, and when I saw they were playing so close I knew I had to try and photograph this show. I am happy to say they are everything I could have imagined live, and more. Iconic songs, performed perfectly, with vocals second to none, and the stage set was beautiful.
I write these posts every time I go to photograph a show, and each time I try to explain what “brilliant musicianship” sounds like, and that’s not easy. I am luck that I am not assigned shows to photograph, I pick them. I get to photograph shows with artists I already respects and care about. In the case of The Smashing Pumpkins I was in heaven. Again, it’s tough to describe music in a blog post.
Near the end of the show Billy Corgan’s son Augustus came out on stage for what was a magic moment. In looking at photos of Billy with both his partner Chloe Mendel and Augustus you’ll quickly see that Augustus is into music too. In an interview I saw in People, Corgan said that Augustus watches music videos every day, but to me this moment was all about dad. I can’t even imaging how wonderful having him on stage must be.
The setlist for Thursday included everything you’d expect, like Today, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Tonight Tonight, Cherup Rock, and more. Just a great show. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds did 12 songs, and of course covered a few Oasis songs, like Wonderwall and Little by Little.
For the final song of the set he did a fantastic version of The Beatles “All You Need Is Love”, and if it put a stamp on a great set.
Opening the night was AFI (A Fire Inside), and this was a band I was particularly happy to finally get to photograph. I had heard amazing things about their live show, and yeah…. fantastic.
I need to catch AFI again really soon. Great energy, and a great performance. Be sure to catch this tour, and these bands, whenever you can… well worth it.
There is a gallery of more photos below, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the show. Follow me online at:
