If you have read more than a few of my “App of the Week” picks, you’ll most likely guess I’m into photography. I love to pull out a camera anytime I can, and the old saying that “the best camera is the one you have with you” is true. When I use a DSLR, I take my shots and then process them in a variety of software packages – Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop etc. One software package I use, as a plugin inside all of those, is the Nik Software Complete Collection. Their software is nothing short of amazing, and if you use any of the photo processing software I mentioned I suggest you try their trial versions. You’ll end up buying the stuff. The problem is, sometimes the camera I have with me is the iPhone. Sometimes I just want to take a photo and post it online or email it to someone. That’s where today’s pick come in…

Nik Software has released Snapseed for iOS. This app is amazing. With this app you can Straighten, Rotate, or Crop your image. You can also adjust White Balance, Saturation, & Contrast, or apply effects like Black & White, Vintage, Drama, Grunge and more. When you’re done you can add a border and share the photo any way you normally would. The effect above is Grunge 400. Yep, 400, and there are many more. On the iPad this thing is THE app to have. In fact, on the iPad it even supports RAW images!

The one thing in Snapseed that is hard to describe is a feature in all Nik Software packages – U-Point technology. It allows selective control of specific parts of the image. It does take getting used to, but once you figure out U-Points you’ll want them in every app.

Put it this way, buy Snapseed form Nik Software, seriously. It’s available in the App Store for $4.99 and is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (3rd generation), and iPod touch (4th generation). The current version has 5 stars from 39 ratings, but the overall is 4.5 from 354 ratings. Highly recommended.
