I love movies. Actually, I love good movies – that’s where the hard part comes in. Finding “good” movies. We all hear the critics reviews, and we have critics we tend to agree with, but sometimes they are just plain wrong. Today’s app is great for finding good movies, and a lot more.

Movies by Flixster is a mobile app available for virtual any major mobile platform – along with being a full web service. Depending on your mobile platform the app offers different features. For example, iPhone users get access to rent or buy movies on iTunes. I give a lot of credit to Flixster for not just porting the same app to all platforms. It at least seems they really developed each version specifically for that platform.

So what can you use this app for? Based on their website, the iPhone app has the most features. The Android version does not support the iTunes feature mentioned above (of course), but the description also only lists buying tickets with the iPhone version. There are features mentioned in the Android Market that are not even mentioned on the Flixster site.  I’m not sure why they would not take the time to list all features for each version. The descriptions for each platform there just don’t seem to be complete. The following feature list from iTunes seems to be the most complete feature list, but not all features may be available for your device.

  • Preview movies that are opening this week and see what’s hot at the box office
  • See what’s new on DVD and Blu-ray, and browse a catalog of over 50,000 films
  • Watch high quality trailers and video clips for over 10,000 blockbusters and indie flicks
  • Read movie reviews from Rotten Tomatoes
  • Search for your favorite movies, actors, and directors
  • Look up showtimes and buy tickets from movietickets.com (for participating theaters)
  • Get maps that show nearby theaters and what movies they’re playing
  • Find restaurants near theaters and read reviews with the Yelp app
  • Buy or rent movies from iTunes right on your device (iOS devices only)
  • View and manage your Netflix queue
  • Create your own personal “Want-to-See” list, and rate and review movies
  • Connect with a Facebook or a Flixster account to share your ratings with your friends
  • Play movie trivia quizzes (this feature is not available on the iPad yet)

There are a ton of movie apps available, but this is one I use the most. My one complaint – and it’s a major WTF moment – is their ad system. I HATE ads. Their implementation even shows full screen ads at times, forcing you to click the “I hate Cupcakes” button. What a pain in the… Hey Flixster, please create a paid app so I can choose to have no ads.

The app is available for iPhone/iPad which has an overall rating 3.5 from 388,863 ratings, but 5 stars for the current version off 13,901 ratings. On Android it has 4.5 stars from 140,066 ratings. It’s also available for Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and as a mobile web app.
