Sammy Hagar returned to his hometown of Fontana recently to be honored by the city as part of their 100th anniversary celebration. In addition to serving as the Honorary Grand Marshalof the 2013 Fontana Days Parade, the town presented the “Red Rocker†with a sign for Hagar Way, a new street dedicated to their hometown hero.
After leading the parade on a float with his family by his side, Sammy was given the street sign that read ‘Hagar Way.’ Although no mention of a speed limit was made, judging by the namesake we can only assume that speeds in excess of 55 are highly encouraged, although perhaps not legal.
Hagar seemed genuinely touched by the gesture. After being given the sign he addressed the crowd, saying, “Something about in your hometown having a street named after you, that warms my heart. This is awesome. This is one of the favorite things that has been done for me in my whole career.†He also threw some love out to his brother, joking, “Only problem is I know my brother’s going to go around saying it’s his name too.â€
During the celebration Hagar was asked by the Fontana Herald how it felt to be a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to which the thankful Hagar replied, “It’s not as exciting as being the grand marshal of Fontana Days for the 100th anniversary of Fontana, my hometown!â€
On the musical front, Sammy will also be heading out on his ‘Four Decades of Rock’ tour kicking off at the beginning of June and dates through early September. No So Cal dates yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do!
Last Thursday night, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino hosted the M-One “Reborn” Muay Thai event. There were nine great bouts, with seven of the nine being for a title. Six of the fights ended with either a KO, or a TKO, and last fight with the Inland Empire’s own Joey Pagliuso ended with a knockout that actually worried people. Starting the night, Eric Luna defeated David Huerta for the MTAA National Junior Lightweight Title…

See that? That is what Vance Albitz’s living room is looking like lately. If we have our way, it is gonna look a lot more packed than that in the next few days! I don’t know if you had a chance to hear him with Stu, Tiffany, and Jimbo this morning, but that is a young man with a great plan. After reading an article asking some of our troops what they would most like to get in a box from home where the answer was “A couple of gloves and a ball so we could play catch”, Vance started up the Gloves4Troops web site with his father, and set a goal of collecting 1000 gloves and balls to send out to our troops overseas. Such a pure and simple joy, playing catch, and all of us here at KCAL were moved to find some way to help out. Now Vance plays minor league ball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, and he’s got to report to spring training on February 18th, so it’s up to us to help him get closer to his goal before then.
If you’ve got an old glove taking up space in the garage, or a few baseballs that are in good shape that you could manage to live without, or if you’ve got 20 bucks that you could kick down to help sponsor sending a box to our troops overseas, please help out. Check out his web site to see how to get your things to him, or bring your gloves or balls down to the station and we’ll get them to him for you. To make it even easier for you to join the effort, we’ll be sending the KCAL Crew out to the various corners of the I.E. over the next few days. Listen in to find out when we’ll be in your neighborhood! Here’s a really cool article that was written about Vance on ESPN too…
